Wellshire Inn Description:
The Wellshire Inn has been a landmark in Denver since 1926 when it opened as the Wellshire Country Club, sitting on a 140-acre golf course. The golf course went public in the 1930s and the Tudor-style restaurant followed some years later. The old-school interior still has the feel of a private club, and comfortable chairs and love seats in the multi-level lounge are covered in rich, muted tapestries. Weekday evenings, 40-somethings belly up to the long, onyx-and-agate bar for a quick vodka martini on the way home from work. Weekends, an older, well-heeled crowd gathers to listen to piano jazz. Large windows look out onto the golf course and the snow-capped Rockies in the background. The dark-paneled dining rooms, by contrast, are broken up into smaller seating nooks that create a quite intimate atmosphere. The predictable Continental fare is hardly cutting-edge, but dishes such as the Cobb salad, filet mignon, grilled salmon, and prime rib have their legions of fans. Sides include complimentary roasted vegetables, mashed potatoes, and grilled ratatouille. The extensive wine list includes plenty of reasonably priced bottles.
