Avenue Grill Description:
One of the cornerstones of the vibrant 17th Avenue restaurant row, the San Francisco-style Grill continues to satisfy crowds of power-lunching professionals, hipsters and longtime locals. The merits here are many, starting with the sprawling back bar and the elbow-to-elbow cocktailers who call this home. Skilled barkeeps pour the killer martini and brimming shots of spirits; the beer list includes local ales and a nice contract-brewed amber. Push away from the bar and grab a cozy table in the dark wood and white table-clothed dining room. Several original dishes from the restaurant's early years still appear on the menu today, alongside an ever-changing list of seasonal selections. Starch-shirted servers are attentive and bring forth nicely marbled portions of grilled steer and filets of salmon and Pacific fish. Unfortunately, the once dreamy cioppino has been "improved" and now pines for the spicy broth and snow crab knuckles of the past. Most of the finned fare maintains its heritage, however, and the crème brûlée is the best in town.
