Star Kitchen Description:
It's high noon on a weekend at Star Kitchen, and the impatient hordes, their brows furrowed, their lips pursed, are jostling one another while scouring the boxy dining room for an empty table. Everyone huddles near the front door, loathe to allow more newcomers. But just as you're ready to kick the door in defeat, the tiny woman behind the register suddenly smiles and calls your name, quickly ushering you to a table that's soon swarmed by a caravan of carts, pushed by women who enthusiastically urge you to try the chicken feet, congee or shrimp dumplings bright with chives. The carts keep rolling, one right after the other, with salt-and-pepper-crusted shrimp; shu mai (one tin is never enough); barbecued pork buns (beautifully sweet and salty); lobster dumplings (a rare treat); and Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce. It's a parade of textures, flavors and adventures superseded only by the fact that the servers are as sweet as the egg tarts.
