Mercury Café owner Marilyn Megenity is a patron saint for Denver's left-of-center-culture, and her delightful establishment has been ground zero to local artists for decades. In the bohemian confines of "the Merc," some of the finest local and national musicians, poets and playwrights have moved audiences craving side-stream creativity. In the downstairs bar it's jazz and acoustic music; there is mini-theater in the adjoining dining room/play house. Upstairs it's live music, from Celtic folk and jump blues to western swing, bluegrass and much more. Oh, yeah, the food. Megenity and her staff dish up whole-earth wonders, from vegetarian sandwiches and pastas to quiche, hybrid comfort foods and more typical fare. The soups are homemade with care and fresh ingredients; the eye-popping dessert menu is loaded with dreamy diet-busters. The after-dark set sips java specialties and soothes their souls with cocktails and distilled spirits. Megenity puts her support-local-artists credo where her beer glass is by offering a slew of thoughtful beers made right in the neighborhood.
