Blood red walls specked with gold and silver set the tone for this spicy little spot where weekend crowds hang on the sidewalk while waiting upwards of an hour for a table. And this is no Tex-Mex joint, the focus is on the cuisine of Veracruz. Start with the devilishly rich queso fundido Tamiahua, a concoction of melted cheese, sausage and peppers served on a blisteringly hot cast iron skillet. For entrées, look for dishes with the pipian sauce, a blend of ground pumpkin seed and epazota. Though the menu is short on descriptions of unfamiliar dishes, the friendly staff will gladly help decipher things for you.
