Cafe San Miguel Description:
Café San Miguel sits far from the trendy end of Henderson Avenue and serves traditional Mexican with a touch of Tex-Mex all wrapped up in a modernist approach. Bubbling-hot and decadent, queso fundido is served over a bed of grilled onions, mushrooms and poblano peppers, ready to roll up in a fresh flour tortilla. At lunch, tacos and tortas are featured, and we much prefer the tacos in thick, soft corn tortillas to the Mexican-style rolls used for the tortas. Try the achiote-infused pork tacos, topped with crumbled queso fresca and bits of fresh pineapple. Dinner is more adventurous, with dishes like the grilled quail topped with a zesty mole sauce; and the huachinango en salsa verde, a beautifully seasoned seared red snapper with an avocado-and-tomatillo sauce, topped with grilled cactus. We find the house's frozen Pomerita too sweet and grainy to pass muster in the town that invented the frozen margarita machine; better to ask for one of the top-shelf margaritas.
