Miyake Description:
It's tempting to dismiss Miyake. It qualifies for all our rules for reasons to avoid a sushi place---more than ten rolls named after insects, states or mythical creatures---and it goes a step further with rolls named after high tech giants like Apple after nearby Apple Computer. On most nights, Japanese pop music blares, disco lights spin, the boats go round and round, and an intermittent fog machine does its inexplicable thing. But gimmicks aside, Miyake is a pretty good sushi bar if you stick to the basics. We like the Stanford Roll (oh, yea, they have rolls named after colleges, too)---asparagus, tomato and real snow crab mixed with mayonnaise. We also like the amaebi, sweet prawn served with the fried head; and the spider roll with crunchy soft shell crab, cucumber, avocado and daikon sprouts. Also located at 140 University Ave., Palo Alto, 650-323-9449.
