A window onto the kitchen of chef Patty Queen's cottage reveals the finer points of Southern technique: from the flash-fried oyster Caesar salad to the ginger-fried calamari, it's obvious that Queen---a third-generation chef who honed her skills at the Bistro at Maison de Ville in New Orleans---knows how to wield a frying pan. Her seasonally changing, eclectic menu naturally shows Southern roots---take the garlicky, spicy Nawlin's BBQ shrimp---but it also roams the globe, even within a single dish: bruschetta bears Brie, braised lamb boasts a Provençal-style crust yet sides that suggest Sicily and Greece. Somehow it all works---as warm, festive and easy-to-like as the atmosphere created by a staff dotted with family members.
