Tempranillo Description:
With the bright lights of Aspen just a short jaunt away, the down-valley bedroom community of Basalt has long been overshadowed by its ritzier, glitzier neighbor. But a number of restaurants are transforming Basalt into a commendable dining destination---and Tempranillo is leading the march. Spearheaded by chef-owner Javier Gonzalez-Bringas, it's a bar-cum-restaurant suited to sexy, young hipsters with polished palates. The whimsical menu, a marriage of Spanish and Italian cuisines, peddles a rift of small plates and main dishes that zigzag from calamari with chorizo to stuffed piquillo peppers and a potato and octopus salad. Seaworthy shellfish bolsters the piquant paella fragrant with saffron, and the red snapper with tomatoes, leeks, capers and garlic is just as lively. The bar area bristles with a conversational crowd, and true to its name, you'll find several Tempranillos on the impressive wine list. Join the throng of jovial locals who saddle up to the community table and share in the revelry, or settle into the dim-lit dining room festooned with wooden accents, colorful art and a blazing fireplace.
