Lavo Matic Cafe Description:
This urban neighborhood's upscale wine bar and restaurant updated its menu to include a lower price point for pub-type fare; now, even Bud Light appears on its rather selective beer menu. That's a big deal for this hip but slightly pretentious French eatery, founded by chef Jean-Robert de Cavel in a refurbished laundromat in the Gateway Quarter of Over-the-Rhine. Lavomatic, named for the French word for laundromat, keeps the wash theme going with a laundry wringer for a hostess stand and a clothespin attached to your bill. In between those cycles, you'll find a menu no longer filled with dishes like free-range local rabbit or ravioli stuffed with beets. French takes on American classics, like tater tots, are are oh-la-la with chives, bacon and cheddar. The smoked and grilled pork chops are served with seasonal mushroom hash. And the gourmet grilled cheese appears as a French baguette. Lavomatic is big on fresh, local ingredients, but sometimes it is stingy with portions. When the weather is nice, the rooftop terrace is a great place to go for a view of the Art Academy and other renovated urban buildings.
