Bonbonerie Description:
When sophisticated Cincinnati women get engaged, they often dream of cakes from this artistic bakery, where everything is made from scratch. BonBonerie---its name a variation on the French word for "confectionery"---has a signature opera-cream torte that is a sight to behold: chocolate chip-filled chocolate layers brushed with vanilla syrup, coffee liqueur and brandy and filled with a mixture of white chocolate, cream and butter. The cake is glazed with bittersweet chocolate and skillfully decorated with more chocolate. A look or smell of that alone is enough to lure "ladies who lunch" into the bakery's tea room. The café serves a mini version of the opera cream cake during afternoon tea, along with quiche, finger sandwiches and more than 75 kinds of tea. Lunches are light, ranging from the crêpe or daily quiche to a tuna plate or turkey sandwich. Soups and salads are served with a side of fruit and cookies. Even the tin-looking ceilings are elegantly decorated with Victorian double fans that give the place the feeling of another era.
