Carlo & Johnny's Description:
Carlo & Johnny makes an offer you can't refuse---it serves creative cuisine with an upscale attitude in plush surroundings. Steeped in history and adorned with antiques---including doorknobs from Al Capone's winter home---the building was once a private mansion, nightclub, speakeasy and illegal gambling joint. Legend goes that entertainer Kitty Kallen was singing "Mule Train" in December 1949 when the casino was raided. The restaurant, from the folks behind Jeff Ruby's, is named in memory of the two cops who had a hand in the infamous raid. These days, the menu features extensive sushi and sashimi choices. Entrées include wood-grilled salmon with sweet pepper piperade and ginger coulis as well as Kentucky bison strip steak with black pepper-berry demi-glace. Sides to share include truffled creamed sweet corn, creamed spinach and potato-pancetta au gratin. Three separate dining rooms have their own distinct feel. With red leather banquettes, green velvet wall coverings and an eye-catching, lighted mermaid statue, the Emerald Room is pure old-world; the Ivory Room offers hardwood floors and ceilings and unusual antique chandeliers; and the Grille Room has exposed brick walls, cathedral ceilings, a wood-burning fireplace, solid stone hearth and trophy animal heads on the walls. Three wine cellars and live music round out the offerings.
