Heartland Cafe Description:
This jovial spot may not be 100 percent vegetarian (chicken and fish are served, plus the occasional steak or buffalo chili), but there's enough to please those who are seeking alternative cuisine. Carrot juice is first-rate, as are the grilled kebabs and the fruit cobblers. Beyond that, the menu offers up fried green tomatoes, West African vegetable stew and plenty of seafood dishes, perhaps Coho Alaskan salmon with mashed sweet potatoes and sautéed greens. There is an adjacent general store that is stocked with health-centric books and magazines. Entertainment on the weekend completes the retro '70s attitude.
