Spiaggia Restaurant Description:
Frescos inspired by Andrea Mantegna's fifteenth-century paintings for the Camera degli Sposi in Mantua help make this sleek café perfect for a tryst, if you sit at a table for two in a window alcove overlooking the cityscape. It's also less expensive than Spiaggia across the hall---but far from cheap. Keep the tab down by concentrating on beginners, like carpaccio with lemon dressing, crisp arugula and shaved Parmigiano-Reggiano, or pastas, among them gnocchi with wild boar ragù. Main courses can be a letdown. Anyway, dessert is worth saving room for, particularly airy coconut Bavarian, mousse-like bittersweet chocolate torte and one of the best chocolate ice creams in town. Some servers have too much attitude, but if you tell them it's a special occasion, you may get a pleasant surprise.
