Atwood Cafe Description:
There's a new sheriff in town at this petite, theatrical-looking dining room in the historic Hotel Burnham. The Deco-style space---a favorite among State Street shoppers---is now overseen by Derek Simcik, a well-traveled chef who draws inspiration from his multicultural homes in Tunisia, Japan and Germany---not to mention from his Louisiana-bred mother. Tweaked comfort food remains the focus on the plate, though now it is far more adventurous than it once was. Bourbon chicken and pork sausage, bathed with the velvety contents of a poached egg, gives way to an airy crab cake soufflé, teamed with arugula purée, bits of freeze-dried corn and fried green tomatoes. And the pot roast? It's anything but ordinary. Braised Wagyu beef cheeks stand in for chuck, resulting in a decadent, full-flavored companion for whipped potatoes, braised carrots and onions. Interestingly, Simcik---like his predecessor, Heather Terhune---has a pastry background. It shows in finales like charred cherry bread pudding with dulce de leche and rum sauce.
