The first word you hear as you enter the luxurious Siena Hotel is a welcoming "bon giorno." The hotel's restaurant, Il Palio, an extension of the ornately decorated lobby, is known as much for its friendly, knowledgeable service as for its Northern Italian cuisine. Chef Adam Rose's commitment to using fresh local produce results in such delicacies as butternut squash ravioli with shiitake mushrooms and sage-brown butter balsamic vinaigrette, a mushroom risotto with grilled eggplant, and Ashley Farms duck confit with house-made pappardelle, organic kalamata olives and a white soffrito. Vegans will appreciate Rose's plant-only specialties such as wild mushroom lasagna. The dessert menu displays such treats as apple amaretti tart and a crème brûlée flavored with Bailey's. A fine array of Italian wines, with unusual depth in several categories, is augmented by interesting choices from Austria, California, France and Australia. Even Madeira shows strength in this array. The surroundings make an elegant spot for an early morning breakfast business meeting, while lunch runs a lighter course, from salads to pizzas, pastas and panini.
