The Helmand Description:
Walls the color of summer squash, hand-woven Persian rugs, and a wood-burning oven make this Afghani restaurant a decorative delight; the bright menu is its counterpart. With a rich history due to its central location on the Silk Road, Afghanistan has developed its own type of melting-pot cuisine, surrounded by an aromatic haze of spices and influences from all across the Middle East, Asia, and even the Mediterranean. And The Helmand has transplanted it intact. The pumpkin and eggplant appetizers---both rich with yogurt and ground beef---are famed. Aushak, leek-stuffed ravioli, are mini-cornucopias of spice. Lamb dishes are nicely executed. The wine list is first-rate by ethnic restaurant standards, growing over the years to incorporate everything from New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs to South African Pinotages. And while the desserts aren't quite the smash hits the savories are, we could never end a meal here without some of the high-octane Turkish coffee.
