Tamarind Bay Description:
An Indian restaurant in a basement location just off of JFK St. in Harvard Square. The decor is contemporary, with a menu to match. Dishes are made to order.
Tamarind Bay's novelties are compelling. In an attractively contemporary if cramped basement space, guests sample cooked-to-order Indian specialties that go way beyond tikka masala. Even after the novelty wears off, what remains is a quality dining opportunity. Vegetables in particular shine here: earthy black lentils, eggplant in cashew sauce, tangy sweet-and-sour cauliflower, ginger- and cilantro-tinged chickpeas---all diverge strikingly from the muddied gravies batch cookery yields. The tandoor also produces hits: quail, scallops, potatoes and even beets all get the clay-oven treatment with enlightening results. Above all, it's the Indian way with spices, so often muddled in American translation, that's restored here. Of course, one obvious capitulation to Western tastes---a full bar, complete with a seasonal wine list---only enhances the experience.
