Jasper White's Summer Shack Description:
A gourmet take on casual, summer-by-the-sea grub.
There are other branches in Boston's Back Bay and in the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, CT.
A bright yellow, forty-foot statue depicting a fisherman guards the front door to Jasper White's mammoth homage to New England seafood, setting the stage for kitsch. And sure enough, inside are communal picnic tables fit for grade-school cafeterias, booths in cotton candy-blue leather and a rollicking raw bar---not to mention lobsters fidgeting towards gastronomy in 1,200-gallon tanks. The common-denominator menu offers more than enough choices to please the crowds. As you'd expect, even White can only be so consistent when serving hundreds a night. The signature pan-roasted lobster rocks. Clambakes borne of the patented Lobster Line are a blast. But many a lowbrow fried item comes out soggy and erratically seasoned, while their highfalutin' counterparts suffer from lack of attention to detail. Bottom line: Just like the seaside shacks it emulates, this place is about the experience---salty, sassy and over-the-top. Also located at 50 Dalton St., Boston.
