Tory Row Description:
Tory Row has a lot going for it. There's Matthew Curtis and Chris Lutes' tried-and-true formula: modern design, accessible small plates, a well-edited drinks menu. (Curtis and Lutes are the masterminds behind Middlesex Lounge, Miracle of Science and Audobon, popular with the lounging hipster crowd.) There's its prime location, ideal for people-watching, smack in the center of Harvard Square. And there's a reasonable price point, good for budget-conscious students and profs. Finally, there's a menu that aspires to be all things to all appetites. Sometimes it succeeds. The cutely termed "Pan-Atlantic" menu spotlights dishes from Europe and the United States. High points include a duck confit salad and an admirable veggie burger. But the kitchen falls flat with a porous croque monsieur and most dishes come paired with ho-hum mixed greens. Beer-drinkers, at least, will enjoy the thoughtfully selected local drafts; indeed, Tory Row is a perfectly acceptable place to grab a pint and watch the world go by---and floor-to-ceiling windows only help the cause. But serious diners might be disappointed.
