Russell House Tavern Description:
Russell House Tavern opened with great fanfare, thanks in large part to its pedigree. Its owners operate popular pubs including the Temple Bar and Redline---solid neighborhood spots, if not gourmet dining destinations, convenient to local T stops. Russell House continues the tradition of serving well-priced, unpretentious fare in comfortable digs, not far from the center of Harvard Square. The menu, which offers everything from pizza to raw bar items to hefty meat entrées, isn't especially memorable. We've sampled an overly yeasty pizza, leaden crab cakes, and a limp roasted vegetable skillet. The food lacks focus and tries to be all things to all people. On the plus side, there's a fun wine list that offers several well-priced selections from a beer-style tap. There's also a raw bar, one of few in the Harvard Square area. And finally there's pleasant, helpful service, both in the buzz-y upstairs bar and downstairs in the dark, cavernous dining room. All in all, a perfectly happy place to refuel, but nothing to drive (or T) out of the way for.
