Sojourner Cafe Description:
Santa Barbara landmark eatery serving organic globally influenced food. Voted best desserts. Focusing on semi-vegetarian (no red meat) cuisine featuring local organic produce. Casual atmosphere. Wine, beer and full coffee bar. Original art changes monthly on the walls. Reservations recommended.
Back when the Soj opened in 1978, it created quite a stir in a town best known at that time for steaks and enchiladas. The young crowd on a small-planet vegetarian kick packed the place, ordering vegetable lasagna and huge bowls of brown rice with veggies and nuts topped with melted jack cheese. In commemoration of its 30-year anniversary, the restaurant now offers a choice of portion size on almost every menu item. Other than that, things haven't changed much. The place is still popular with the old generation, as well as a new one, both enjoying hearty soups, spicy black-bean stew, crispy tofu and onions, and other favorites. The Soj is justifiably proud of its outrageous home-baked desserts. While service tends to be, shall we say, relaxed, it's a nice place to linger, with local art on display and good people-watching---particularly for out-of-state visitors curious to see Santa Barbarans in their natural habitat.
