This unassuming spot has a lot going for it---including regular patrons who line up nightly for one of the freshest Thai tables in town. The smiling staff is efficient, yet approachable, and the entire operation---from the hand-written specials board to the tidy take out orders---is as tight as a drum. The appetizers are small works of art, like the plump and juicy shu mai topped with bright orange smelt roe and crisp, garlic bits. In line with its audience, healthy fare---including non-dairy curries and plenty of veggie offerings---are menu mainstays. Raw foodies like the spicy papaya salad with green beans and peanuts while carnivores opt for the Crouching Tiger salad with savory slices of beef on top of spring greens. Zen Yai is also known for spicy stir-fries, homey noodle dishes and a sweet sticky rice with mango for dessert.
