Sakana Description:
If you think of the gilded Coast Village Road shopping center---where Sakana is located---as a "strip mall" then Manhattan's Time Warner Center is an oversize food court. This chic yet teensy space caters to down-tempo celebs and other movers and shakers who reside in this wealthy seaside enclave. Single white roses and twinkling glass votives impart a minimalist ambience, yet the sushi is over the top. It's not unheard of for four or five artfully applied sauces to grace specialties like the salmon battera press box roll: crab, scallions and avocado are molded in the press box then topped with translucent, pale green battera, seaweed and ikura (salmon roe). Other delights included the tuna zuke nigiri sushi with ginger-and-soy-marinated tuna, and the champagne crab---snow crab legs topped with caviar and champagne-shallot-yuzu vinaigrette.
