In an office plaza on San Gabriel Boulevard, the welcoming storefront Hong Yei is full of families beginning their meals with cold appetizer plates from the display case. Most parties move on to beef or scallion pancakes while awaiting spicy casseroles of duck, beef, lamb or chicken and stir-fries sporting cautionary three-pepper warnings. Vary the spice levels by ordering a mild sizzling rice dish or savory shredded pork with dried bean curd. Indian flavors appear in pungent cumin lamb, which nets only two peppers. Leek and pork dumplings are also a good way to temper the more incendiary fare. The House Specialty and Szechwan Style categories on the menu offer the more intriguing dishes.
