Dong Ting Chun Description:
Upstairs in the San Gabriel Village mall, Dong Ting Spring is one of the area's new wave of Hunan restaurants. Dark wood chairs and patterned carpets make the restaurant a touch more formal than the usual brightly lit room, and a large menu features hard-to-find Hunan specialties as well as more familiar dishes. Hunan-style dishes include wild mushrooms stir-fried with smoked ham, paper-pot roast chicken, hot and spicy snails and a show-stopping giant fish head with noodles and tofu, one of the menu's priciest selections at $16.95. There's a good selection of vegetable dishes: eggplant with green beans has a bright, clean flavor, and the vegetables retain their texture and color; and tofu with dried vegetables is a huge portion of mildly-sauced bean curd. Unusual soups include lotus with pork ribs and peanuts and duck with lily and herb taro. Cumin lamb, hot and spicy lamb and fried beef with wild pepper fill out the meat categories of the menu. Beer and wine are available.
