There are a few restaurants in Sonoma County that are so utterly special they prompt locals to smile inside---spots that embody why out-of-towners leave jealous of the distinctive culinary scene. You might guess it in this case, just from the name, and from where the restaurant is situated, in rural Valley Ford in a tiny 1860s hotel. Road warriors park their bikes and join foodies in the yellow walled dining room with ceiling fans and plank floors. Area ingredients, often organic, span ranches, sea and gardens, and products such as honey, yogurt, cheese, ale and bread highlight local artisans. Oysters from nearby Drakes Bay come raw, barbecued or cornbread-crusted and bubbly with bacon, cream cheese and arugula. The rest of the Southern-accented menu seems equally aphrodisiac. Try crawfish hushpuppies, cheesy baked grits, fried chicken with beer and caraway gravy or a half-pound burger topped with local blue cheese and fried farm egg. Rock the night away on a front porch rocker, perhaps with the pie du jour, pineapple upside-down cake or apple fritters.
