Authentic tastes of Italy have landed at Giancarlo's Ristorante Mediterraneo in Morro Bay. Chef Giancarlo Cucumo specializes in seafood dishes such as the generous cioppino, his crispy roasted sand dabs stuffed with delicate Dungeness and shrimp, or pasta with scallops and clams that have been seared in the wood-burning oven. Of course, the oven also cranks out crispy flatbread pizzas ranging from the classic margherita to the inventive "Romana"---with prosciutto di Parma, mozzarella, figs, arugula and tomato. In addition, Cucumo uses the oven for braising everything from his succulent osso buco to the mushrooms for his creamy ravioli funghi. For dessert, enjoy homemade tiramisu or panna cotta, and if it's not too busy, the chef might even whip up some luscious zabaglione for two. Seating options range from the lively bar fronting the demonstration kitchen to a more intimate dining experience in the adjoining room, and the wine list leans more towards Italian labels than locals.
