Barefoot Cafe Description:
It's clear that the folks at Barefoot Café are trying hard. The small, bright space on Fairfax's main street is freshly painted and clean, though the overall effect is sterile, lacking a cozy neighborhood café feel. The young, earnest service staff, while incredibly friendly, can't tell you what sides come with your meal. Most of the food falls a bit short, as in the turkey sandwich made from pedestrian turkey and served on thin slices of un-toasted wheat bread, and the not-quite-cooked home fries. Still, there is redemption in the well-made soups, omelets, cornmeal waffles and large, fluffy whole-wheat pancakes served with real maple syrup. The dinner options aren't particularly exciting, but you can have fish 'n' chips (also on the lunch menu), which emerges from the open kitchen crisp and golden. Happily, kids are welcome here---it is Marin, after all.
