Ambrosia India Bistro Description:
Locals still reminisce about the long-shuttered Clock Garden restaurant when visiting 565 Abrego Street, but the memory has reason to fade. After a string of unsuccessful heirs, Ambrosia appears here to stay. Chef Bhupender Singh gives the Monterey Peninsula---finally---a great Indian restaurant. Singh's résumé boasts one of the best names in Indian---he's head-cheffed at Mountain View's Amber India. Sample one of a laundry list of cocktails or order a bottle of Dom Perignon. No kidding, the wine list is full of surprises. Ambrosia calls what they do "Indian Frontier Cuisine." Translation: authentic, regional flavors influenced by the likes of Mughal Emperors and southern fishermen. Curry and tandoori dishes are both worth ordering. About that latter, expect a wait for the bone-in chicken, marinated in yogurt, ginger, garlic and garam masala, skewered and cooked in the earthen oven. It's worth every extra and anxious minute. Occupy yourself with keema kulcha, soft bread filled with minced lamb. When the dining room fills up with smoke (ask to open the front or back door for a breather), you know sizzling plates of chicken, sea bass, and leg of lamb tandoori are on the way. Repeat visits are a must to sample the host of unusual appetizers like tandoori bharwa aloo, scooped potatoes filled with potato hash, raisins and cashews.
