Beachwood BBQ Description:
Downtown Seal Beach is lucky to have Beachwood BBQ among its many, sometimes bland eateries. Chef Gabe Gordon, who has cooked at some of Southern California's most prestigious restaurants, has brought his Euro sensibilities to Beachwood BBQ. If you can (this tiny place is usually packed), start by sitting at the 12-seat bar and order up one of 20-plus handcrafted beers from all over the world. While drinking your brew, try a down-home appetizer such as fried pickles and deviled eggs or go upscale with a house-cured olive and smoked nut plate or a smoked pâté and cheese dish. The salad menu is quite extensive and we enjoy the butter leaf salad with roasted peppers, smoked pears, candied pecans and rosemary blue cheese dressing. Pork, beef, chicken, sausage and fish are all smoked for hours. The meaty dry-rub ribs are just the right combination of spicy and smoky. Four barbecue sauces (sweet, spicy, mustard, vinegar) sit on each table for liberal use. Side dishes are standouts, especially the blue cheese grits, cayenne pepper and honey carrots, smoked asparagus, and sweet potato fries. If you have room for dessert, try the Key lime pie or the sour cherry chocolate bread pudding.
