Sushi Ran Description:
Sausalito locals are probably happy that this sushi gem is just off the town square, tucked away on Caledonia St. There certainly are enough people who know about the sparklingly fresh sushi and alluring Japanese food by chef Scott Whitman. The restaurant even opened up a comfortable wine bar across the courtyard from the dining room to accommodate the overflow diners until seating became available. Now both places are comfortable, stylish and casual. But only in the dining room can one feast on oysters broiled Sushi Ran-style, and bonito-crusted seared hamachi with grilled asparagus and a miso-mustard sauce. Kobe-style beef arrives with petite white mushrooms and a piquant yuzu-kosho sauce. Sushi lovers will remark on the fish available (not the usual tuna and salmon list) while those not so hot on cold fish will love the miso-glazed black cod, Singapore-style chili lobster, or the hoisin-glazed rack of lamb. Desserts go well beyond green tea ice cream. Consider the homemade mascarpone ice cream with bright red strawberries or the bananas Foster with ginger gelato and toasted coconut.
