Swiss Lakewood Restaurant Description:
Continental menus---that mix of hotel-French and other European dishes---once defined "fine dining" in the United States. Now, they survive only in pleasant anachronisms like Swiss Lakewood. And thank goodness. Duck à l'orange, wienerschnitzel and spinach salad prepared tableside with hot bacon dressing still have a place, as do the unctuous fondues served in the bar in winter. The wine list covers Europe's basic high points, including some young first-growth Bordeaux. We especially like the Pouilly-Fumé de Ladoucette, a longtime Loire favorite hard to find in Tahoe. Elsewhere, Lakewood's look (Ah, Bavaria!) would be Alpenkitsch, but here, in its longtime piney setting, the restaurant still charms.
