Rudy's Can't Fail Cafe Description:
There are plenty of fun things to peek at at this high-energy diner located on an otherwise nondescript stretch of Emeryville: tables and booths feature playful themes (board games, action figures), good music adds a punk-like edge, and specials boards above the bar area provide entertaining reads. Once the food arrives, however, all distractions are categorically ignored, as this budget- and family-friendly cafe seems to have the Bay Area's favorites covered. Generous breakfasts are so good that, as no reservations are taken, wait times can be grueling; luckily, free Peet's coffee is available for anyone in line. Nightly specials include stick-to-your-ribs meatloaf, macaroni and cheese, and fried chicken with buttermilk biscuits, though plenty of lighter, vegetarian and vegan options are available, as well as separate menus for the kiddies. On nice days the surrounding asphalt is transformed into a merry outdoor patio. More pluses: $1 beers after 9 p.m.; creative drinks, such as the "shakin' Jesse," a milkshake made from Guinness, espresso and chocolate ice cream; and the fact that the diner is open every day from 7 a.m. until 1 a.m.
