Rancho Valencia Restaurant is located in the heart of one of San Diego's most beautiful and relaxing resorts. The continental-meets-California cuisine features creative combinations of classical and regional ingredients. Recommended first courses include Moulard duck foie gras with pickled Asian pear and Black Mission fig crostini drizzled with a honeygar port reduction; the seafood trio, which includes sashimi-grade ahi, an avocado crab cake and a Baja-style jumbo prawn cocktail; and the roasted red beet and green bean ginger couscous. Don't miss the caramelized six onion soup gratinée, a much better choice than the overly mild butternut squash bisque. Wild mushrooms, corn, sweet peas and roasted Lady apples lend a touch of sweetness to the pork tenderloin, while the manchego potatoes and oven-dried tomatoes contribute to the bold and diverse flavors of the Colorado lamb tournedos. Desserts run the gamut from fresh berry sorbet to molten chocolate cake. We like the classic-with-a-twist Asian pear tarte Tatin, served with pistachio crème anglaise and mascarpone gelato.
