Ramos House Café continues as a breakfast and lunch spot in San Juan Capistrano's historic Los Rios district. Located in a charming cottage, the eatery has all-outdoor dining, with tables placed under a huge oak tree, protected by a sturdy wood-latticed awning and warmed by heat lamps. The small menu of Southern-inspired New American dishes changes weekly, but many options, such as the duck sweet potato hash, are always available. Chef-owner John Q. Humphries (or "John Q., the grumpy man in the back," as he refers to himself) does marvelous things with humble dishes. For example, start your day with banana-maple pain perdu with toasted walnuts and cream. For lunch, begin by dipping crisp yet tender sweet potato fries into a Point Reyes blue cheese dip. Then, order up a Southern fried chicken salad with corn bread, cranberries and pumpkin seed buttermilk dressing or macaroni and beef stew with roasted vegetables and blue cheese mash. Garden-grown vegetables and gourmet garnishes elevate the chef's creations. Everything's made by hand on the premises, including the ice cream.
