The family behind Mama Gina's Italian eatery in Palm Desert---there's also a location in Florence---has gone contemporary California with their bistro, Piero's. It's not a mom-and-pop, old-world place but a modern, stylish room. The dining area is separated from the bar by banquettes that feature glass partitions with a soothing waterfall effect. You can dine al fresco on the large patio. The menu aims to please all comers, with an ambitious---maybe overly ambitious---range of items. The biggest draws are the raw bar and the seafood appetizers, which include oyster shooters and a ceviche of the day. The mushroom soup is a first course option; otherwise, try the pizzas, the pastas and the panini. The well-rounded wine list includes labels from Argentina, Napa, Australia, France and, of course, Italy. Happy hour takes place every day from noon-6 p.m. and from 8.30 p.m.-closing, which ensures that the place is buzzing from early afternoon through the evening. At peak hours, that buzz reaches a low roar.
