Loews Coronado's re-conception of its upscale restaurant is a welcome and successful change. The room's subtle blue palette, in homage to the endless sky and sea views displayed in the floor-to-ceiling windows, gives the restaurant a casual breezy feel, appropriately, as its namesake Mistral describes a wind that travels across Europe, particularly influencing the sunny climate of Provence. Appropriately, a fifth-generation French chef, Patrick Ponsaty, has stepped in as chef de cuisine and has created an exciting menu with his take on French cuisine with vibrant, intense flavors inspired by Europe's Mediterranean coast. Ponsaty makes use of the bounty of San Diego, connecting with the finest ingredients through the wealth of farmers, foragers and fishermen. While the food speaks of fine dining, the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming.
