Marmalade Description:
In 1989, Selwyn Yosslowitz launched Marmalade Café in Santa Monica with Bobby and Bonnie Bums. Their eclectic concept now includes multiple cafés, including this casual branch near the confluence of the 101 and 405 freeways. The globe-trotting menu is scattershot, but offers some viable options. At breakfast, vegetarian eggs Benedict incorporates a meaty portobello mushroom, roasted tomato and spinach. There's also an egg scramble with tortilla strips, chorizo and jalapeños. At lunch, expect a large selection of sandwiches and salads, plus "small bites" like the steamed Castroville artichoke with chipotle mayonnaise. Dinner is the most eclectic meal, with items ranging from Vietnamese bouillabaisse and "South of the Border" fajitas to Italian chicken piccata. We especially like the simple cup of carrot-ginger soup, but find the roasted beet salad bland, though there are nice flavor bursts from crumbled blue cheese and candied walnuts. To drink, stick to the balanced wine list. For dessert, order the streusel-topped apple pie or peanut butter fudge Bundt cake.
