Far Western Tavern Description:
When Bobby Flay needed a demonstration of authentic Santa Maria-style barbecue, he came to the right place. Local cattle ranchers have frequented this Guadalupe outpost for its iconic local barbecue since 1958; and if anyone knows beef, it's Santa Marians. The kitschy cowboy décor, with cowhides covering every seat from the bar through the restaurant, is excessive but mostly authentic. We particularly like the touch of the time-honored relish tray with celery, carrots, radishes, olives and pepperocinis. Steaks are choice-cut, aged 21 days, hand-trimmed and grilled over the area's signature red oak. Every generous plate can be ordered "classic"-style which includes the works: bay shrimp cocktail, green salad or soup, choice of baked potato, french fries, onion rings or polenta, pinquito beans (the small red beans that are a must with Santa Maria-style barbecue), salsa and garlic bread. Light eaters can order à la carte. The moderately priced and predominantly local wine list nicely complements menu selections, whether you're feasting on beef, ribs or jumbo Mexican shrimp scampi.
