Flowers, baskets of freshly baked breads and a crackling fire greet you in this warm Mediterranean-style restaurant that sits in the heart of Pacific Grove. Each of the several intimate dining rooms features cheerful décor, from the stone wine room to rooms painted with countryside murals. The osso buco shines, made sweet with a braise of Madeira and savory with velvety pieces of braised veal. Other worldly and worthy dishes: a fragrant couscous Algerois made with chunks of lamb seasoned with the spices of North Africa, and a bountiful seafood paella. Sure, you can opt for the steak, but a better choice would be the double-cut grilled lamb chop. We like the simple preparations of uncommon French regional dishes as well as understated fish dishes (the sand dabs stand out) and pasta preparations. Boula boula, a hearty pea and turtle soup popularized during the Kennedy administration, makes a surprising menu appearance. Salads pay an ode to the Trader Vic era---there's hearts of palm with "Oriental" dressing and a spinach mimosa. For dessert, don't miss the vacherin Marquis if it's available: meringue with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and almonds. Spend some time digesting the global wine list, in particular, zero in on the fine port offerings.
