Cafe Gibraltar Description:
Serves fare from around the Mediterranean, with dishes whose origins can be found in countries such as Spain, Portugal, France, Greece, Turkey, and Morocco.
There is a parking lot behind the restaurant on the north side of the building.
Café Gibraltar is one of the best restaurants in San Mateo County. Chef-owner Jose Ugalde has crafted a menu of Mediterranean favorites with a definite tilt toward Middle Eastern flavors. To further our education, dishes are even earmarked with their area of origin---Catalan, Spain or Sardinia. One standout appetizer is the calamari and octopus sauté dressed up with a hint of cinnamon. Another is the striped bass cheeks sautéed with capers, thyme and picholine olives. His mezza platter is like no other featuring six creatively flavored dips, roasted garlic cloves and olives. Entrées range from a rabbit dish flavored with smoked paprika and pomegranate juice, to a duck roasted and served with pears with a hint of sherry. The décor is also creative, including four booths with low tables and seating on cushions. Don't miss the unusual Greek float, an ouzo-flavored gelato concoction texturized by a compote of warm figs. The wine list encourages enjoying a variety of by-the-bottle selections as well as those by-the-glass with most priced in the $30 and $6.50 range respectively.
