Pea Soup Andersens Description:
Casual atmosphere. A California tradition, with restaurants now located in several cities along major highways. Serves coffee-shop food and Danish specialties.
It's no secret why crowds of people from every-which-where pull off the 101 freeway at all hours of the day and evening just to visit this restaurant. The pea soup, originally concocted by Anton Andersen in the 1920s, is legendary. Mr. Andersen's success was no accident---he was a trained chef who left a prestigious career in Los Angeles. Little did he guess that 80 years later, his little, family-owned eatery would have outlasted just about every other restaurant in the state. It now serves gallons of split pea soup every hour. Obviously the soup is the only must-try on the menu. It's excellent---worlds apart from the canned variety--but if you're not usually a fan, we suggest you order something else to round out your meal. Sandwiches and homestyle classics are hearty and satisfying. The onsite bakery provides all the bread, pastries and desserts.
