La Grande Orange Cafe Description:
It took an Arizona-based company to give Del Mar Station, a historic Spanish Mission-style train depot, new life. At La Grande Orange Café---"LGO Café" for short---big vintage lanterns hang from rough-hewn ceiling trusses, while polished wood, Southwestern colors (with a touch of orange, of course) and candles warm the room. The enclosed patio, with its fountains and fireplace, is among the prettiest in town. The menu showcases appealing comfort foods, along with vegetarian options and some Mexican-inspired specialties. Deviled eggs, a spunky rendition with six halves laid out on a long wooden plank, are a fine way to begin, followed by short ribs, lobster tacos or various burgers on soft buns; the soy-glazed ground ahi burger, layered with slaw, is a winner. Pan-fried chicken is juicy and flavorful, although its crust may not stick well. But paired with a cinnamon roll, it's a nice take on chicken & waffles---add a side of mac 'n' cheese, and you'll feel satisfied. Key lime pie could be more tart, but this creamy creation, attractively presented, is satisfying nonetheless. Microbrews and a short but serviceable wine list round out the options.
