Arroyo Chop House Description:
Close in proximity yet miles apart in cuisine are this New York-style steakhouse and its nearby sibling, Parkway Grill. (Owners Bob and Gregg Smith also include Pasadena's Smitty's Grill, Bel-Air's Vibrato and local Crocodile Cafés in their boutique portfolio.) With a traditional steakhouse menu and vibe, this spot is ground zero for hungry beef lovers---in contrast to the Parkway Grill's lighter California fare---with favorites like filet mignon and rib-eye served with a choice of sauces including portobello mushroom, béarnaise and peppercorn-sherry. We have been disappointed in recent years with some of our experiences at the Chop House: a bland heirloom tomato salad with a skimpy complement of burrata cheese, steaks with excessive fat and a good quality salmon filet not attentively deboned or thoughtfully sauced. More reliable are the desserts---sure bets are the oversize apple pie and cheesecake, but also popular are chocolate and Grand Marnier soufflés. This local spot features some splendid Arts & Crafts architectural details.
