Cheval Blanc Bistro Description:
Veteran Pasadena restaurateurs Bob and Gregg Smith (Parkway Grill, Arroyo Chophouse) have introduced a lively French bistro to their repertoire, located in historic Old Pasadena. Cheval Blanc Bistro inherits the space of an unsuccessful upscale saloon concept, but with a little imagination offers the warmth of a real bistro. A massive antique bar anchors the front room, which transitions into a spacious dining room in which French beverage posters line dark-wood walls. Bistro classics dominate the menu and a short wine list offers some respectable French wines. Diners might begin with a version of a salade lyonnaise, foie gras au torchon or crispy veal sweetbreads in a cloying port reduction. Steak frites, roasted leg of lamb and duck confit appear on the list of entrées, as well as a modified coq au vin in which only the leg has been stewed in wine. Finales, which are noticeably weaker than other Smith Brothers restaurants, include profiteroles and an apple tart.
