The Cellar Description:
The Cellar has been one of north OC's most romantic restaurants since 1969. Walk down a flight of narrow stairs and open a wooden door to a real cellar, which was decorated in an elegant manner by one of the artisans who built Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean ride. Once inside and seated cozily in one of three rooms with black banquettes, red carpet, Goddess statues and glowing candles, it is time to order a glass of wine and one of chef David Kesler's appetizers. We enjoy a glass of sparkling Champagne with a piece of foie gras sandwiched between two slices of ripe pear, which comes swimming in pan juices. The house-smoked quail is both crispy and juicy and pairs well with a full-bodied Chateau Ste. Michelle Northstar Merlot. Unfortunately, entrées like the fatty and undercooked rack of lamb didn't thrill as much nor did the duck breast with its too thick and too strong raspberry-infused wine reduction. The Grand Marnier soufflé was unfortunately overshadowed by a wimpy crème anglaise. Still, The Cellar is worth the trip for the charming service, excellent wines, signature dishes and incomparable romantic vibe. The wine cellar, which is located just above the restaurant, is a treasure trove sheltering more than 1,400 labels.
