Trader Vic's Restaurant Description:
With the original location shuttered pending development of a massive hotel-condo project, some would argue Trader Vic's restaurant has been relegated to history; others would say that it has been reincarnated as Trader Vic's Lounge. Both would be right. You can now sip the trademark exotic cocktails in a different spot at The Beverly Hilton, right by the pool, under the palm trees. In addition to the legendary mai tais and Scorpion Bowl (a formidable, festive concoction serving four), there's a short menu on which you'll find tidbits in Trader Vic's very own style. Among them are crispy coconut prawns, signature crab Rangoon, steamed lobster dumplings with sesame-chili sauce, and a selection of sashimi and sushi rolls. For more robust appetites, the Thai red curry has been kept on the menu. The full-service version of Trader Vic's, which operates restaurants from London to Dubai, has reemerged downtown, at L.A. Live. This abbreviated version just doesn't have the same vibe as the venerable Beverly Hills original. Then again, after a couple of mai tais, memories tend to fade.
