Din Tai Fung Description:
Rethink that vacation to Taiwan and head to this Arcadia mini-mall housing one of the best dumpling spots this side of the Pacific. The bustling, minimally decorated restaurant is the only stateside branch of a famous Taipei-based dumpling house. The compact menu features approximately 50 options: delicate steamed dumplings, nourishing soups and a variety of vegetables served in various incarnations. The house specialty is xiaolongbao, or small soupy dumplings, little pillows tinctured with pork and filled with hot, savory consommé. There is also an assortment of northern Chinese dumplings and sweet treats, like the longevity peach, a steamed baozi filled with black sesame paste or mashed lotus seeds. Din Tai Fung is justifiably popular, so expect a wait for one of the highly coveted tables. To meet demand, a second location opened just a few doors away at 1088 S. Baldwin Ave., 626-446-8588.
