Khao Sarn Cuisine Description:
This casual Thai restaurant in Coolidge Corner goes beyond the standard Thai menu with some regional dishes from Northern Thailand. The atmosphere is slightly more upscale than some ethnic eateries, but still casual.
This Coolidge Corner spot expands on the old pad thai-tom yum-satay routine Thai cuisine is forced to repeat ad infinitum in most of its stateside restaurants. There are Sino-ized dishes like the rich pork braise that is muu paloo, and the iconic appetizer called miang kum---delicate spinach leaves topped with nubbins of kaffir leaf, lime, pork cracklings, peanuts, garlic and shallots. Ask about other dishes from the Northern region as well, like the wonderful haw moak, a sort of fish custard steamed in banana leaves. And though it's named for Bangkok's backpackers' ghetto, don't pigeonhole Khao Sarn into the normally downscale ethnic category: it's a surprisingly classy place which even specializes in cocktails like lychee martinis.
